Explore Niwot: four places in walking order

Old Town first, then Cottonwood Square, then whatever the weather allows. The whole loop is under two miles, and you only park once.

Niwot sits off the Diagonal Highway between Boulder and Longmont, about twenty minutes from either. Leave the car on or near Second Avenue: the two commercial blocks are within a fifteen-minute walk of each other, and the park and the trail are at their edges.

01 · Old Town

The brick and false-front commercial block on Second Avenue is the reason the rest of this page exists. It dates from the railroad period and it is still where the community gathers. Walk it end to end in about ten minutes; the cross streets are short and the sidewalks continuous.

Getting there: street parking along Second Avenue and the adjacent lots. Best for: coffee, browsing, and the historic building fronts. Who is on the block.

02 · Cottonwood Square

The second cluster of shops and everyday services, north-east of Old Town. Less historic, more practical, and where a lot of residents actually run errands. Two bronze bears sit on the corner outside the tavern.

Getting there: a short walk or a two-minute drive from Old Town; lot parking. Best for: lunch on a patio, the bookshop, the market.

03 · Public art

The steel gateway sculpture stands at the highway edge of the community, an oval sign held inside two curving rails. Further works are sited around the commercial blocks, close enough to see on the same walk.

The Niwot Sculpture Park, run by the Niwot Cultural Arts Association since 2018, shows sculptures the association has bought or been given alongside pieces lent by artists for a year at a time, chosen by the park’s committee. The association’s site lists the current pieces. Individual works are named here only with a verified title, artist and location; send one and it goes in with artist credit.

04 · Parks and trails

Whistle Stop Park sits at the south-west corner of Murray Street and First Avenue, at the edge of Old Town, and keeps the restored caboose. The Longmont-to-Boulder (LoBo) Regional Trail, twelve miles between the two cities through Gunbarrel and Niwot, runs through the community and joins the local loop, and Left Hand Creek crosses the fields east of the built-up blocks.

Trail surfaces, closures and dog rules are set by Boulder County Parks & Open Space rather than by a town, since Niwot is unincorporated. Best for: walking and cycling; the eastern fields at sunset.

A simple first visit

  1. Park on or near Second Avenue.
  2. Browse Old Town and stop for coffee or lunch.
  3. Walk to the caboose at Whistle Stop Park.
  4. Continue toward Cottonwood Square or the LoBo Trail.

Getting here

Drive times are estimates for normal conditions and vary with traffic, weather and construction; check a live routing service before you set out. From Boulder or Longmont it is about twenty minutes on the Diagonal Highway (CO 119). RTD’s BOLT bus between Boulder and Longmont stops at Niwot Road; check RTD for the current timetable.

Niwot is unincorporated, so parking rules, road work and trail closures are set by Boulder County rather than a town. Posted signs override anything written here.

Accessibility: what we can confirm

Second Avenue has continuous sidewalks with curb ramps at the cross streets, and the Whistle Stop Park lawn is reached from a paved path. Entrances vary across the historic block: several have a single step at the door and some have raised wooden porches.

Step-free access differs building by building, so contact a business directly before relying on it. Public restrooms and designated accessible parking have not yet been confirmed on the ground and are not claimed here.
