Niwot with kids: a playground, a caboose, ice cream and a flat loop

Everything in Niwot a family can do on foot from Second Avenue, and the two places a short drive away, with what each is actually like.

· Checked September 27, 2026

Niwot is small enough that a day with children needs no car once you have parked. The playground, the caboose, the sculptures, the pizza and the ice cream are all within the two commercial blocks and the park at their edge. This is the order that works.

Start at the playground

Niwot Children’s Park is the playground on First Avenue, across from Whistle Stop Park. The Cultural Arts Association built it and keeps it up, and it turns ten in October 2026. The flower cart on the Murray Street corner is a summer fixture beside it.

Directly across the street is Whistle Stop Park, the lawn beside the 1907 Burlington Route caboose at the corner of Murray Street and First Avenue. The caboose is the thing every child wants to climb, and the lawn is where the Rock & Rails concerts happen on summer Thursday evenings, which are as family-friendly as an outdoor concert gets. Daylight hours.

Walk the sculptures

The Niwot Sculpture Park is at the south-west corner of Niwot Road and 79th Street: a lawn with large sculptures, some owned and some lent by artists for a year at a time, so the collection changes. Counting them and picking a favorite is the game. From there it is a five-minute walk to Second Avenue for lunch.

Lunch and ice cream

Abo’s Pizza in Cottonwood Square sells New York-style pizza by the slice, which is the right unit for a child, from 10:30 most days. The Niwot Tavern on the corner of the square has a covered patio beside the bronze bears and is the default for a long family lunch, open daily from 11.

Love Ice Cream on the 200 block of Second Avenue makes small-batch ice cream with a dozen or so flavours, including dairy-free ones, from noon every day.

The taproom that takes children

Fritz Family Brewers, on 79th Street a few minutes south of the commercial blocks, is a family-run brewery that takes children in the taproom and dogs on the patio. It opens at 3 on weekdays, 1 on Fridays and noon at weekends. German-style lagers for the adults; the brewery’s own site has the current hours.

A flat loop with a stroller

The Niwot Loop Trail is the flat, easy Boulder County loop around the edge of town from the trailhead on 79th Street. It links to the LoBo Regional Trail, the twelve-mile crushed-gravel path between Longmont and Boulder, whose eastern fields at sunset are the reason to go a little further. Both are sunrise to sunset; dogs on leash.
